The proposed new festival weekender CINEOLOGY LIVE! has been cancelled due to the low number of bookings received since the event was announced last January. This is despite tremendous support from the cast and crew of ASHES TO ASHES - the successor series to LIFE ON MARS - a favourite in the Cult TV Awards. Indeed, our thanks go out to Matthew Graham, Philip Glenister, Ashley Pharoah, Dean Andrews, Joseph Long, Geff Francis, Jane Featherstone and Simon Crawford Collins for accepting our invitations. Those who have already booked will be contacted in the next few days by a Pontin's adviser to sort out refunds of payments, so there is no need to worry on that front. The unusual format of the event would have seen three series put under the spotlight, one on each day of the weekender (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), but it became apparent that the agents of stars of other Cult series were going to demand ridiculous fees for what was to be a charity benefit event in aid of the Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund. Cineology Live! Programme Director Alex J Geairns commented "There are a lot of television appreciators in Britain who want to see a fresh approach to the celebration of the best fiction from the small screen. However, we simply couldn't reach enough of them to make it worthwhile this time around. It's been three years since our last weekender, which was then under the CULT TV banner. Many of our regulars from those days have been in touch to say they need at least a year's notice to clear their diaries and get the pennies together for attending such an event as ours. I am extremely grateful to Pontin's for giving us the chance to try and relaunch a live event, and their support has been tremendous. I hope that perhaps we'll get another chance to work together in the future". |

Earlier this year, Cineology was delighted to see “The Return of The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman” come to DVD. This was the first of a trio of ‘Bionic Reunions’ of the original series cast members that had been produced over the years. It is no surprise, therefore, that this threesome of TV movies can now be completed on collector shelves with the release of “Bionic Showdown” and “Bionic Ever After”, available from Mediumrare on 27 September 2010. In the first movie, made in 1987, we find that our hero Steve Austin (Lee Majors) is now a disenchanted loner, who is persuaded out of his seclusion by his old friends at the Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI) to help them defeat Fortress, a group of international terrorists. His former heart-throb, Jaime Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) is also co-opted to join in the operation. |

“14 Blades” is a lavish, award-winning, martial arts adventure movie along the lines of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “House of Flying Daggers”. Set at the dawn of the Ming Dynasty (around the 14th Century), this epic yarn follows Qinglong (Donnie Yen – “Ip Man”, “Kill Zone”), once commander of the Emperor’s elite guards, now a hunted rebel seeking to restore dignity to his ruler and himself. Armed with an amazingly compact and versatile, not to mention deadly box of 14 blades (imagine Batman’s utility belt but in spring-loaded box form), Qinglong must call on his immense kung fu and weapon-wielding abilities, and build new alliances to help him return the Imperial Seal to its rightful owners, defeating those who have betrayed him and are seeking to usurp the Emperor.

Danny Dyer (“Severance”, “Doghouse”) stars in this new British horror film, which is being released near-simultaneously across all media. Dyer plays Gary, a disillusioned anti-war protester who bizarrely finds himself locked in a terrifying underground bunker along with some fellow demonstrators. As annoyance quickly turns to desperation, it is not long before tempers fray and bitter accusations fly between the group members. Friendships start to crumble, people mysteriously disappear and disturbing noises suggest they are not alone. What was or is the purpose of the labyrinthine tunnel network? Who has locked them in and why? And does someone in the group know more about their predicament that they are letting on? The group must get to the bottom of these questions and escape before their time runs out. Writer-director Asham Kamboj’s premise a group of people being trapped in a maze with an unseen threat is not exactly original. |

Well, would you believe it? A new release of a couple of episodes of Space Patrol on Blu-ray, available as a web exclusive from the Network website. This is a series that has been intertwined with the history of the Cult TV organisation. As part of the Student Union society at Wolverhampton University, we managed to get hold of a copy of an episode to screen. In 1994, in the run-up to our first Festival, we sought to find the original prints to encourage a video release. In 1998, those initial video releases were celebrated at our Festival that year. And now, through the miracles of technology, here it is given a new lease of life. This is Earth. The year is 2100. And here we see this 1963 series in a quality you would have never thought possible, especially as it hasn’t been seen on British television since 1968. Only two episodes remain in their original 35mm film format and these have been freshly transferred in High Definition and restored especially for this release. |
